This week we looked at how we can stand strong in the face of adversity – Staying faithful, even in a hostile environment. (If you missed Session I, you can review the material here.)
Christ – Center of the Old Testament
So as we continue our study in this great book, I’d like to call your attention to something that is very important to be cognizant of every time we study the Old Testament.
Jesus said to the religious rulers of his day “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness of me.” This passage is alluding to something my Pastor says all the time. Quite often, he’ll say “It’s all about Jesus”
The New Testament is all about Jesus, but what many do not realize is that the Old Testament is as well. It is very important to be aware of this as we study. A lot of times we come to a passage that may seem hard to understand, but when we put Jesus in the middle of it, all of a sudden, it becomes easier to get a handle on.
Augustine said, “The New Testament is in the Old Concealed, and the Old Testament is in the New revealed.”
Peter understood this. Writing to believers he explained that the Old Testament prophets didn’t even realize they were actually writing about Jesus hundreds of years before he came. Peter says,
“Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
So as we go through Daniel, we will highlight these “Christ sightings”, as he appears, and we will begin to see the integrity of the whole. 66 books, 40 different authors, many different locations, over a span of many years, and yet it’s all one big book that points to and reveals Jesus to mankind. Good stuff!
