At the end of the 9th inning, cued by radar that showed an incoming storm cell, the ground crew chief made the decision to call a rain delay. With the score tied at 6 and the game going into extra innings, he wanted to make sure that weather would not be the deciding factor in this heart pounding, nail biter of a game. The 7th game of the World Series, no less.
So he called the rain delay and as the ground crew began to tarp the field, the Chicago Cubs players headed to the dugout. News soon began to spread. Right fielder, Jason Heyward had called a players only meeting.
As the rain began to fall the players gathered in the equipment room to stir each other up, refocus, and prepare. The rain delay was only expected to last around 45 minutes, so it was understood – this game would be completed this night.
As you probably know, when the delay was over the Cubs came out focused and poised and initiated a 2 run rally against Pitcher Bryan Shaw. Ben Zobrist scored pinch runner Albert Almora Jr. with an RBI double, then Miguel Montero followed with an RBI single to score what proved to be the winning run.
During the bottom of the 10th the Indians were able to score 1 more run, but ultimately fell short. To the absolute delight of the most patient and loyal fan base in all of baseball, the Chicago Cubs were finally World Champions!
As the post game interviews were conducted an interesting phrase began to circulate from the Cubs players. “Best Rain Delay Ever”
“What does that mean?” asked one of the interviewers. They then shared about the meeting Jason Heyward had called and how pivotal it was to them.
When they finally interviewed Heyward they asked him “A lot of players are saying the meeting you called during the rain delay was huge. Why did you call that meeting? What did you say?”
Heyward’s answer? “I had to remind them who they were.”
Did you catch that? He had to remind them who they were.
Here’s the point. When things get crazy it’s important for champions to remember who they are.
And if you are in Christ, here’s a fact that is indisputable. You are a champion – after all, you have the Greatest Of All Time living on the inside of you!
So when things get crazy, call a meeting and remind yourself of who you are. (see below for a detailed list of who you are In Christ, courtesy of ficm.org)
When you see your brother or sister faltering, do not hesitate to remind them of who they are. Take a moment to renew your mind to the truth while you are going through the fire.
You are a champion – believe it and remember it. Sometimes that’s all it takes!
